Super Stainless Steel 253 MA: High-Temperature Performance

253 MA (UNS S30815) is a lean austenitic heat-resistant alloy designed for applications requiring high creep strength and excellent oxidation resistance. While it has a lower nickel content than many high-temperature alloys, it punches well above its weight class thanks to a precise blend of rare earth metals and nitrogen.

Key Performance Features
  • Superior Oxidation Resistance: Effective at temperatures up to 1150°C. It forms a protective, tightly adherent oxide layer that resists scaling even under cyclic conditions.
  • High Creep Strength: The addition of nitrogen and carbon provides better creep-rupture strength compared to standard grades like 310 or 309H.
  • Cost-Efficiency: Because it uses less nickel than 310S, it offers a more stable and often lower price point while maintaining high-performance metrics.
  • Structural Stability: It exhibits good resistance to sigma phase embrittlement, ensuring the metal stays ductile during prolonged exposure to heat.
Technical Specifications
Property Value/Detail
Density 7.8 g/cm³
Melting Range 1370 – 1430°C
Key Ingredients Chromium (21%), Nickel (11%), Silicon (1.7%), Nitrogen, and Cerium
Machinability Moderate; similar to 304 but requires high-quality tooling due to work hardening
Common Industrial Applications

Given its ability to withstand intense thermal environments, 253 MA is a staple in "hot" industries:

  • Energy & Power: Used for biomass and waste-to-energy boiler components, furnace fans, and damper blades.
  • Chemical Processing: Ideal for heat exchangers, recuperators, and high-temperature piping systems.
  • Metallurgy: Utilized in oven linings, furnace belts, and annealing baskets.
  • Automotive: Found in exhaust manifolds and turbocharger components where heat cycles are frequent.
Fabrication & Welding

253 MA is highly weldable using standard methods like MMA, TIG, and MIG. It is recommended to use matching 22.12.HT fillers to ensure the weld bead maintains the same oxidation resistance and mechanical strength as the base metal.

Note: Due to its high silicon content, the alloy is sensitive to grease and oil during welding. Ensure surfaces are surgically clean to avoid hot cracking.
