Hastelloy® C-276 (UNS N10276)

Hastelloy® C-276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloy reinforced with tungsten, designed to provide peerless corrosion resistance in an incredibly wide range of severe environments. Often referred to as the "universal" corrosion-resistant material, C-276 is one of the few alloys that can withstand the corrosive effects of wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide. Its low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, ensuring that the alloy maintains its structural and chemical integrity in the as-welded condition.

At Aries Alloys, we supply Hastelloy C-276 to facilities tackling the most volatile chemical processes. Whether you are dealing with aggressive organic chlorides or highly contaminated mineral acids, our C-276 inventory offers the ultimate insurance against catastrophic equipment failure.

Exceptional Performance Attributes
  • Unrivaled Pitting Resistance: The high molybdenum content (15-17%) provides extraordinary defense against localized pitting and crevice corrosion in high-chloride environments.
  • Aggressive Acid Immunity: Outstanding performance in strong solutions of oxidizing salts, such as ferric and cupric chlorides, and hot contaminated mineral acids.
  • Wet Chlorine Specialist: One of the very few materials capable of surviving the intense corrosive attack of wet chlorine gas and bleach solutions.
  • Low-Carbon Stability: The "C" (Low Carbon) designation ensures that the alloy resists the formation of grain-boundary precipitates, allowing for safe use in most chemical process applications in the as-welded state.
  • High Thermal Tolerance: Maintains excellent resistance to oxidation in temperatures up to 1900° F (1038° C).
Technical Insights & Composition

The Tungsten Advantage: What separates C-276 from other nickel alloys is the strategic addition of Tungsten (3-4.5%). This element, combined with the high molybdenum levels, significantly enhances the alloy's resistance to corrosion in stagnant or low-flow conditions where "crevice" attacks are most common.

Mechanical Capabilities:
  • Specific Gravity: 8.89
  • Yield Strength: 52,000 psi (355 MPa)
  • High Ductility: Easily formed and cold-worked despite its high-strength profile.
  • Non-Magnetic: Remains non-magnetic in all conditions.
Primary Industrial Use Cases

Aries Alloys is a key supplier of Hastelloy C-276 for high-consequence chemical environments:

  • Pollution Control: Liner plates, dampers, and scrubbers for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems in power plants.
  • Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, reaction vessels, and evaporators for handling sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
  • Pulp & Paper: Bleach plants and specialized digester components where chlorine-based chemicals are used.
  • Waste Treatment: Critical components for hazardous waste incineration and wastewater neutralisation.
  • Oil & Gas Exploration: Downhole equipment and sour gas piping where H2S and high-pressure chlorides are present.
Available Product Forms at Aries Alloys

We maintain a robust inventory of C-276 in accordance with ASTM B574, B575, and B622:

  • Round & Flat Bars: For machining high-integrity bolts, pump shafts, and valve stems.
  • Sheets & Plates: Precision-cut flat products for lining large-scale chemical tanks and scrubbers.
  • Seamless Piping: High-pressure tubing for volatile chemical transport and heat transfer.
  • Forged Fittings: Custom flanges, elbows, and reducers for leak-proof, acid-resistant connections.
