Nickel 201 (UNS N02201)

Nickel 201 is the low-carbon modification of Nickel 200, containing a maximum of 0.02% carbon. This slight but critical chemical adjustment makes it the preferred choice for applications involving temperatures above 315° C (600° F). By keeping carbon levels exceptionally low, the alloy prevents the formation of intergranular graphite (graphitization) which can lead to severe embrittlement in standard pure nickel.

At Aries Alloys, we supply Nickel 201 to manufacturers of chemical reactors and electronic components. It combines the classic corrosion resistance of pure nickel with the structural stability required for continuous high-temperature service.

The 201 Advantage
  • High-Temperature Stability: Specifically engineered to resist embrittlement during prolonged exposure to temperatures ranging from 315° C up to 650° C.
  • Elite Caustic Resistance: Like its sister grade, it is virtually immune to corrosion by caustic alkalis, making it indispensable for sodium hydroxide production.
  • Superior Magnetostriction: Maintains excellent magnetostrictive properties, which are vital for sonic and ultrasonic devices.
  • Low Vapor Pressure: High purity and low carbon content result in very low gas content and vapor pressure, ideal for vacuum environments.
  • Enhanced Ductility: Naturally soft and ductile, making it easy to cold-form into intricate shapes, deep-drawn components, and thin-walled tubing.
Technical Profile & Comparison
The Carbon Difference:

While Nickel 200 and 201 are identical in almost every other way, the carbon limit in 201 (0.02% vs 0.15% in 200) is the key to its success. This prevents the carbon from precipitating as graphite at the grain boundaries when the metal is heated, preserving its mechanical strength and ductility.

Mechanical & Physical Indicators:
  • Density: 8.89 g/cm3
  • Thermal Conductivity: Excellent heat transfer capabilities for thermal processing.
  • Electrical Conductivity: Approx. 19% of the conductivity of copper.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Outstanding in reducing environments and neutral/alkaline salt solutions.
Core Industrial Applications

Aries Alloys provides Nickel 201 for specialized, high-heat environments:

  • Chemical Reactors: Fabrication of vessels and piping for chlorination and fluorination processes at high temperatures.
