Stainless Steel 304L (UNS S30403)
Stainless Steel 304L is the extra-low carbon version of the standard 18-8 Chromium-Nickel Type 304 alloy. The "L" stands for "Low Carbon," and this slight chemical modification is critical for heavy-gauge welding. By restricting carbon content to a maximum of 0.03%, 304L prevents the harmful carbide precipitation that can occur during the welding process. This ensures that the material retains its full corrosion resistance in the "as-welded" condition, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing.
At Aries Alloys, we supply premium 304L stainless steel to industries where structural integrity and sanitation are paramount. From massive chemical storage tanks to intricate food processing lines, our 304L stock is selected for its superior formability and long-term durability in moderately corrosive environments.
Key Technical Advantages
- Enhanced Weldability: The low carbon content eliminates the risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld.
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Highly effective in a wide variety of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media, particularly in oxidizing conditions.
- Superior Formability: Can be easily deep-drawn or formed into complex shapes without immediate intermediate annealing.
- Sanitary Properties: Non-porous and easy to clean, making it the global standard for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications.
- Cryogenic Reliability: Maintains excellent toughness and mechanical properties at temperatures well below freezing.
Material Science & Composition
The Carbon Control:
While standard 304 allows for up to 0.08% carbon, 304L is restricted to 0.03%. This prevents the chromium from reacting with carbon to form chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, ensuring the chromium remains available to form the protective "passive layer" that prevents rust.
Mechanical Capabilities:
- Tensile Strength: Slightly lower than standard 304, but more than sufficient for the vast majority of structural applications.
- Non-Magnetic: In the annealed condition, it is non-magnetic, though it may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
- Oxidation Resistance: Good resistance to intermittent service up to 1600° F (870°C) and continuous service to 1700° F (925°C).
