Stainless Steel 316Ti (UNS S31635)
Stainless Steel 316Ti is a titanium-stabilized version of the 316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. While 316L achieves its corrosion resistance through low carbon content, 316Ti uses a strategic addition of Titanium to stabilize the structure. This makes it exceptionally resistant to intergranular corrosion after heating in the 800° F to 1500° F (425° C to 815° C) carbide precipitation range.

The Titanium Effect:
The secret to 316Ti is the "stabilizing" reaction where titanium preferentially combines with carbon to form Titanium Carbides. This reaction is much more stable than the formation of chromium carbides, ensuring that the chromium remains distributed throughout the metal to maintain the protective passive film.

- Density: 8.0 g/cm^3
- Non-Magnetic: Remains non-magnetic in the annealed condition.
- Oxidation Resistance: Good resistance to scaling in intermittent service to 1600° F (870° C) and continuous service to 1700° F (925° C).
- Comparison: While 316L is often used for its ease of fabrication in thinner sections, 316Ti is typically preferred for thicker sections and higher temperature service.
