Stainless Steel 410 (UNS S41000)

Stainless Steel 410 is the basic, general-purpose martensitic stainless steel. Containing 11.5% chromium, it provides good atmospheric corrosion resistance and can be hardened by a wide range of heat treatments to achieve high strength and wear resistance. Unlike the 300-series (austenitic) steels, Type 410 is magnetic and can be quenched and tempered to reach hardness levels required for heavy-duty industrial applications.

At Aries Alloys, we supply Stainless Steel 410 to industries where the combination of moderate corrosion resistance and high mechanical properties is essential. It is the premier choice for parts that must endure high stress and abrasion in environments like steam turbines, petroleum refining, and power generation.

Key Performance Benefits
  • Hardenable by Heat Treatment: Can be quenched and tempered to achieve a wide range of mechanical properties, from high ductility to peak hardness.
  • Superior Wear Resistance: Once hardened, it offers excellent resistance to abrasion and surface wear compared to austenitic grades.
  • Good Atmospheric Resistance: Provides sufficient protection against dry air, fresh water, and mild alkalis or acids.
  • High Strength & Toughness: Maintains excellent mechanical integrity in highly stressed parts like pump shafts and valves.
  • Cost-Effective Performance: Offers a practical balance of corrosion resistance and high strength at a lower cost than high-nickel alloys.
Technical Profile & Composition
The Martensitic Advantage:

Type 410 is essentially a "carbon steel" that has been improved with enough Chromium (11.5 - 13.5%) to give it stainless properties. Because it does not contain significant Nickel, it transforms into a martensitic structure during cooling, allowing it to be hardened similarly to high-strength tool steels.

Mechanical & Physical Data:
  • Density: 7.80 g/cm^3
  • Magnetic Property: Strongly magnetic in all conditions.
  • Maximum Service Temperature: Resists scaling up to 1300° F (705° C), though mechanical properties may decrease if used continuously above 900° F.
  • Corrosion Note: To achieve maximum corrosion resistance, the material should be hardened, tempered, and then polished to remove surface contaminants.
Primary Industrial Use Cases

Aries Alloys provides Stainless Steel 410 for high-stress, high-wear applications:

  • Power Generation: Steam and gas turbine buckets, blades, and shroud segments.
  • Oil & Gas Refineries: Valve components, pump shafts, and piston rods handling mildly corrosive fluids.
  • Industrial Fasteners: High-strength bolts, nuts, and screws that require corrosion resistance.
  • Hardware & Tools: Surgical instruments, dental tools, and specialized cutlery.
  • Mining & Petrochemical: Liners and structural parts for machinery exposed to abrasive and mildly corrosive media.
Available Product Forms at Aries Alloys

We maintain an inventory of 410 in accordance with ASTM A240, A276, and A479:

  • Round & Hex Bars: Precision rods for machining high-strength shafts, fasteners, and valve stems.
  • Sheets & Plates: Durable flat products for wear-resistant liners and structural components.
  • Seamless Tubes: High-strength tubing for mechanical applications and heat exchangers.
  • Custom Forgings: Flanges and specialized blocks tailored for high-pressure service.
