Incoloy® Alloy DS (UNS N08330 equivalent)
Incoloy® Alloy DS is a high-performance nickel-iron-chromium alloy initially developed for the rigorous demands of the heat-treating industry. What makes Alloy DS unique is the deliberate addition of approximately 2% Silicon. This metallurgical refinement creates a material that is exceptionally resistant to "metal dusting," carburization, and nitriding—environments where carbon or nitrogen absorption would otherwise make standard alloys brittle and prone to failure.
At Aries Alloys, we supply Incoloy DS to clients who operate industrial furnaces and thermal processing equipment. Our material is selected for its ability to maintain structural ductility and internal integrity through thousands of heating and cooling cycles.
Key Performance Advantages
- Superior Carburization Resistance: The silicon content forms a protective barrier that significantly slows the diffusion of carbon into the metal matrix.
- Immunity to Nitriding: Performs exceptionally well in ammonia-rich or nitrogen-based atmospheres, preventing the formation of brittle nitrided layers.
- Excellent Thermal Stability: Maintains a stable austenitic structure, which prevents the alloy from becoming brittle even after long-term exposure to high heat.
- Resistance to "Green Rot": Offers improved protection against internal oxidation in fluctuating atmospheres compared to lower-nickel alloys.
- Oxidation Shield: Effectively resists scaling at temperatures up to 1900° F (1038° C), making it a workhorse for the thermal processing industry.
Material Science & Data
The Silicon Factor:
Incoloy DS typically contains 34-37% Nickel, 17-21% Chromium, and 2% Silicon. While the nickel and chromium provide the base for heat and corrosion resistance, the silicon acts as a "sealant" against carbon and nitrogen atoms, preserving the metal's mechanical life.
Mechanical Capabilities:
- High resistance to thermal shock and deformation.
- Maintains good tensile strength at elevated temperatures.
- Exceptional weldability using matching filler metals (Inconel 82 or 617).
- Non-magnetic and highly resistant to intergranular attack.
