Inconel® Alloy 617 (UNS N06617)

Inconel® Alloy 617 is a solid-solution, strengthened nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy designed for the most grueling thermal environments. It is characterized by an exceptional combination of high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. What sets Alloy 617 apart is its ability to maintain metallurgical stability at temperatures where other alloys might suffer from phase transformation or embrittlement.

At Aries Alloys, we supply Inconel 617 to engineers who demand a material that can withstand prolonged exposure to temperatures up to 2100°F (1150° C). Our inventory is sourced to meet the exacting standards required for high-efficiency power generation and advanced aerospace propulsion systems.

Premier Performance Attributes
  • Superior Creep-Rupture Strength: The addition of cobalt and molybdenum provides remarkable resistance to time-dependent deformation under high stress.
  • Exceptional Oxidation Resistance: Forms a thin, protective oxide scale that resists spalling, even under conditions of severe thermal cycling.
  • Resistance to Carburization: Highly effective in environments where carbon absorption can lead to metal dusting or embrittlement.
  • Excellent Fabricability: Despite its high-strength profile, the alloy is easily formed and can be welded using standard gas-tungsten-arc or gas-metal-arc processes.
  • Broad Corrosion Defense: Offers good resistance to a wide range of aqueous corrosive media in addition to its high-heat capabilities.
Technical Composition & Insights
Metallurgical Profile:

The balance of Chromium (20-24%) and Aluminum (0.8-1.5%) ensures superior oxidation resistance, while the high Nickel (44.5% min) and Cobalt (10-15%) content provides the necessary matrix stability for high-temperature service.

Mechanical Capabilities:
  • Maintains high toughness from cryogenic temperatures to extreme heat.
  • Resistant to a wide variety of gaseous atmospheres including oxidizing, reducing, and nitriding.
  • High fatigue strength for components subject to vibration and thermal flux.
  • Non-magnetic and dimensionally stable.
