Stainless Steel 310 (UNS S31000)
Stainless Steel 310 is a high-carbon austenitic stainless steel engineered for exceptional high-temperature service. With a robust chemical profile featuring 25% Chromium and 20% Nickel, Type 310 is designed to provide world-class resistance to oxidation and carburization. It is widely regarded as the premier choice for continuous service in temperatures up to 2100° F (1150° C), far exceeding the capabilities of the 304 or 309 series.
At Aries Alloys, we supply Stainless Steel 310 to industries that operate under the most grueling thermal conditions. Our material is selected for its ability to maintain high creep strength and structural toughness, ensuring that your furnace and heating components do not warp or fail under constant thermal stress.
Elite High-Temperature Attributes
- Superior Oxidation Defense: The high chromium content forms a stable, adherent oxide scale that protects the metal from scaling in temperatures up to 2100° F.
- Resistance to Carburization: Exceptionally effective in moderately carburizing atmospheres, such as those found in petrochemical environments.
- Thermal Fatigue Resistance: Maintains its structural integrity through repeated heating and cooling cycles, making it ideal for intermittent service.
- Excellent Creep Strength: Engineered to resist "sagging" or deformation under load at elevated temperatures.
- Aqueous Corrosion Resistance: While designed for heat, the high chromium content also provides good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in wet environments.
Technical Profile & Composition
The 25/20 Advantage:
The strength of Type 310 lies in its high Nickel (19-22%) and Chromium (24-26%) levels. This combination ensures the alloy remains fully austenitic, providing the necessary ductility and toughness even after thousands of hours of high-heat exposure.
Mechanical & Physical Data:
- Density: 8.00 g/cm^3
- Melting Range: 1400° C - 1450° C (2550° F - 2650° F)
- Magnetic Property: Non-magnetic in all conditions.
- Note on Service: For applications where maximum weldability is required or where service is in the 1200° F - 1500° F range, the low-carbon version (310S) is often recommended to prevent carbide precipitation.
