Stainless Steel 321 (UNS S32100)

Stainless Steel 321 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel designed specifically for service in high-temperature environments. While it shares a similar base chemistry with Type 304, the strategic addition of Titanium (5 × Carbon content minimum) prevents the formation of chromium carbides during welding and exposure to high temperatures. This stabilization allows the material to operate continuously within the critical "sensitization range" of 800° F to 1500° F (427° C to 816° C) without losing its corrosion resistance.

At Aries Alloys, we supply Stainless Steel 321 to the aerospace and thermal processing sectors. It is the premier choice for applications where the material must undergo welding and then remain in service at temperatures that would cause standard stainless steels to become brittle and prone to intergranular attack.

Key Technical Advantages
  • Intergranular Corrosion Immunity: The titanium content "locks up" the carbon, ensuring that chromium remains evenly distributed and the metal's protective layer stays intact after welding.
  • High-Temperature Stability: Outperforms Type 304 and 316 in environments ranging from 800° F to 1500° F.
  • Excellent Creep & Rupture Properties: Offers superior mechanical strength at elevated temperatures compared to non-stabilized austenitic alloys.
  • Superior Toughness: Maintains excellent ductility and impact strength even in cryogenic environments.
  • Ease of Fabrication: Can be readily welded and formed, although it requires slightly more power to machine than standard 304 due to the presence of titanium carbonitrides.
Technical Profile & Composition
The Titanium Stabilization Factor:

The defining characteristic of Type 321 is the addition of Titanium. By reacting with carbon to form stable titanium carbides, it prevents the chromium from being "robbed" from the grain boundaries. This metallurgical phenomenon is what allows 321 to maintain its stainless properties in high-heat zones.

Mechanical & Physical Data:
  • Density: 7.92 g/cm^3
  • Non-Magnetic: Remains non-magnetic in the annealed condition.
  • Scaling Temperature: Resists scaling in continuous service up to 1600° F (871° C).
  • Alternative Grade: For applications requiring even higher creep strength, Stainless Steel 347 (Niobium stabilized) is often used as a direct alternative.
